In this image from May 21, 1961, Patrolman Julian “Paul” Lembke is seen wearing a newly installed seat belt in one of the department’s marked black-and-whites. Safety equipment such as shown here was installed in the entire TPD fleet.

Seen in December 1961 are Lt. Swayne Johnson as Santa Claus (right) with Patrolman Richard “Tiny” Thompson bearing Christmas gifts while paying a visit to a young patient at a local Torrance hospital.

In 1962, the department was still using the public pistol range located near what is now Rolling Hills Road and Hawthorne Boulevard. Department range master Lt. Alex “Porky” Thompson is seen using a 2-inch, .38-caliber revolver on that range. Note that patrol division officers had, by this year, switched back to the original white shoulder emblem.
